The brake master cylinder reservoir is filled with DOT 3 brake fluid as indicated on the reservoir cap. See Engine Compartment Overview on page 10-4 for the location of the reservoir.
There are only two reasons why the brake fluid level in the reservoir might go down:
Do not top off the brake fluid.
Adding fluid does not correct a leak.
If fluid is added when the linings are worn, there will be too much fluid when new brake linings are installed. Add or remove brake fluid, as necessary, only when work is done on the brake hydraulic system.
Warning
If too much brake fluid is added, it can spill on the engine and burn, if the engine is hot enough. You or others could be burned, and the vehicle could be damaged.
Add brake fluid only when work is done on the brake hydraulic system.
When the brake fluid falls to a low level, the brake warning light comes on. See Brake System Warning Light on page 5-16.
What to Add
Use only new DOT 3 brake fluid from a sealed container.
Always clean the brake fluid reservoir cap and the area around the cap before removing it. This helps keep dirt from entering the reservoir.
Warning
With the wrong kind of fluid in the brake hydraulic system, the brakes might not work well. This could cause a crash. Always use the proper brake fluid.
Caution
Brake fluid is a critical component of the braking system in the 2014 Chevrolet Captiva, responsible for transmitting hydraulic pressure from the brake pedal to the brake calipers or wheel cylinders, resulting in brake application. The proper functioning of the brake fluid is crucial for safe and efficient braking performance.
Captiva's owner's manual or service guide provides specific recommendations regarding the type of brake fluid to use, typically specifying a DOT (Department of Transportation) brake fluid rating. It's essential to adhere to these recommendations and use the correct type of brake fluid to ensure compatibility with the vehicle's braking system components.
Regular inspection of the brake fluid level and condition is recommended as part of routine vehicle maintenance. Over time, brake fluid may absorb moisture from the air, leading to a decrease in its effectiveness and potentially causing brake system malfunction or failure. If the brake fluid appears discolored, contaminated, or if the level is below the minimum mark, it may be necessary to flush and replace the brake fluid according to the manufacturer's recommendations.
Proper maintenance of the brake fluid helps ensure optimal brake system performance, responsiveness, and safety while driving the 2014 Chevrolet Captiva. Following the manufacturer's guidelines and conducting regular inspections and fluid replacements as needed contribute to reliable braking performance and vehicle safety.
